WARSTARS,
Scott Huckabuy
World Peace & Prayer Day
Jackson Wellsprings
Ashland, OR
* * *
After
meeting hiring Apollo on as the Warstars new drummer, Andy
Warstar began looking for gigging opportunities. And since
Warstars hadn't played out in two years, the venue was going
to have to be some place special.
When Andy ran into his friend Steve at the Ashland Food Co-Op,
he mentioned that he was getting his band back together. Steve
said he'd like to come by and here some music. Less than a
week later, Steve stopped in and listened to Andy and Apollo
play "Honesty", one of Andy's original tunes.
Steve loved it and so he booked Warstars at Jackson Wellsprings
World Peace And Prayer Day.
Now that
Andy had Warstars heading off in the right direction, he and
Apollo began to prepare. Weeks of practice and the day of
the show finally came.
It wouldn't be a Warstars show without problems from the sound
guy. From the very first chords of "Dangerous Hippie"
Apollo couldn't hear Andy through his monitor. After a couple
stops and starts, the show was on the road. Andy and Apollo
were burning up their unique brand of "alternative folk
rock" when a brief sprinkling of condensation fell through
the air.
The insane hippie sound guy brought the show to a grinding
hault in the middle of the seventh song. In the middle
of "Honesty". (Funny thing, because that
was the last song Warstars had played in concert two years
before, and that version was cut off in the middle as well.)
Andy and
Apollo yielded a great performance, nevertheless, and the
first Warstars show of Summer 2005 was a success. Andy played
as solid as ever, and folksier than ever...
It was also Apollo's first live performance with a live band
and he played excellently. This was a beautiful place to play
since Andy used to camp out at Jackson the summer before,
and had worked on the organic farm on the back of the property,
doing work-trade for living space.
And world peace? Well, this is what Warstars is really working
towards in their music nowadays... No more Slogbaud, no more
pentagrams, and no more bullshit.
After Andy and Apollo got back to Studio 57, they recorded
a self-interview as a way of seeking justice for the inappropriate
arrest of their music at the show.
Andy also had the show taped and Quicktime video footage is
available on Warstars.net MP3s page.
*Note: The soundguy cut off four or five other artists in
the middle of their set that day as well. The organizers of
the event let Warstars know that he will never be hired again.
Praise Jah The Great Spirit...
