* * *
After Andy Warstar's Birthday Party Gig, there were a couple
weeks of downtime. Andy had decided some weeks before that
his intention was to manifest an excellent drummer, who only
wanted to play drums and nothing else.
A few weeks after laying out his intention and desire, Jason
Williams manifested at an Ashland bus stop. Andy was bicycling
past, noticed Jason's long hair, and decided to stop and give
him a Warstars promo disc. DIY, as per Andy's custom.
Jason went home and listened to the disc shortly afterwards.
A day or two later, Jason called Andy and asked if he was
up for jamming. And the rest of the summer 2005 is history.
Jason joined the Warstars, Andy dubbed him Thrasher (because
of Jason's ball cap) until a more "Warstars" stage
name could be thought of.
It was shortly after the first couple weeks of jams with Jason
that Andy ran into his friend Steve again. Steve was putting
together an event in Lithia Park called "Free Speech
In The Park" and asked if the Warstars would play. Andy
said "Of course!" and that was that.
Another couple weeks of jamming had Andy ready to rock, although
Jason showed some apprehension. He felt the material was too
fresh, and that he and Andy "really oughta jam together
for at least a year before playing any shows."
Whatever dude... That doesn't sound very punk rock does it?
No. It does not.
A professional musician ought to be able to play his songs
with little or no rehearsal on a whim, if that's his profession
and he aims to put food on the table by doing so. As Andy
suspected, the freshness of the songs worked to benefit the
sound of the music more than anything.
Andy also had his friend Terry, a professional camera man,
film the entire show. The video is all the more fun to watch,
because you get to see Andy rocking out in an "Uncle
Sam" top hat throughout the whole performance. And it
is in letterbox. Neat huh?
And the ladies really dug the Warstars too. Ah Yeah...
